At first I wasn't going to get into these wireless readers but after a vacation down to California last summer, I realized how tedious and annoying carrying multiple books in your luggage can be. I mean..it only adds on additional weight I don't need, right? These readers are generally 10 to 11 ounces, which is about the same as a hardcover. It would definitely give me more space in my luggage for my shoes (you can never bring enough shoes on a trip). And these things are just suuuuper cool. I'm kind of aiming for the B&N Nook. Its features are better and have more than the Kindle. Unless I was going outside of the country... but I'm not. At least not anytime soon that is.
This is definitely going on my Christmas Wish List :)
Aiight, I'mma throw in my two big cents here.
ReplyDeleteBecause of all the traveling I do, it also dawned on me that an eReader would be much easier on myself than a tons of books [I mean, carrying around 1500 freaking books in single device??]. So, I've been into eReaders the past few months and keeping an ear and eye on things. In fact, I have a kindle now. But, I'm going to do you a favor and fyi you on two things because I'm cool like that and because being a pastor necessitates that I help those in need:
1. There is a free kindle app for iphone/itouch. This thing is money. In fact, sadly for my kindle, I enjoy using the kindle app on my iPhone much more than my kindle. I tell people that are interested in a eReader and have any slight interest in buying an iPhone/iTouch that for me, it's almost worth getting those either of those devices JUST for that app. That's how money I think it is. It does almost everything that the kindle can do, but much faster [the only big thing for me that it lacks compared to the actual kindle is the "search" feature].
The kindle is slow. SLLOOOOWW. Slow. slow....and...slow. Aiight? Going from actual books to a kindle is like downgrading from high speed dsl internet to an old modem, pickled in honey and molasses. Yeah, frustrating. Haven't actually used the Nook, but I imagine it's not going to be that much faster since it also uses e-ink technology like the kindle. You GOT to try out either the kindle or nook before buying it. Try "flipping" through the book and see just how slow it is.
So, if you got a iphone/itouch already then I'm begging you to give the FREE kindle app a try. you can just try one book out. you don't even have to buy a book to try it out. they got free samples of their kindle books AND they got a lot of classic books in their entirety for FREE.
You can go here to for an example of getting a free classic:

Anyways, if you ain't got an iPhone/iTouch then, go out, make friends with someone who does, use them for their iPhone and then thank them and diss 'em. hahaha. uh, j/k.
2. The second big lead I want to throw your way, and this is not as solid as the first, is that there has been big anticipation and big rumors about Apple releasing a "eReader like device." Meaning, it's going to be like an eReader but much more. They are calling it the iTablet, etc.
Here are a couple of articles speculating on the impact and possibility of the "iTablet"

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/09/tablet-print/

Anyways, the iTablet, if it actually does come out, is supposed to be around 500-700 bones. So, not cheap. But I'm saving up for it already :) After using a kindle, the possibility of an Apple eReader that is like a giant sized iPhone is freaking amazing.
Hope all that helps!
Oh, and there is also this app for the iPhone/iTouch that I heard is very good: http://www.lexcycle.com/
ReplyDeleteHEYYY sorry for the delay. I just read this! Weird... I usually get my comments via email but for some reason I must've missed this.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, thanks for your input! I think it's gonna help me a lot. I haven't heard of the iTablet but I think I might just wait for it.. that is if the rumors are correct. For now, though, the Nook is definitely on my wishlist :) haha
