Vogue Korea 15th Anniversary

naturally i have an appreciation for Korean art, so naturally i'm smitten-ed by this cover featuring model Hye-Jin Han wearing Damyeon. this is one of 15 covers for Vogue Korea's 15th Anniversary (so appropriate), but i particularly like this one above others. it shows the origin of traditional Korean garment, but has a contemporary display. Republic of Korea's fashion has come a long way since 1953, the supposed "end date" of the Korean War. in terms of modern lifestyle, there was little to none at that time. for the past 50-odd years, RoK took many efforts to catch up with the US, the then leading country of the world. today, their lifestyle surpasses ours tremendously and is constantly changing at an incredibly fast pace. it's hard to imagine that a country whose vast majority used to wear traditional garments as everyday-wear only 50 years ago, is now one of the leaders of fashion and art innovation.

Etsy journal bandolier - this thing is brilliant. i am always losing track of my pens! that's mostly because i don't like carrying around a pencil case. i'm not a school girl. i have journals, sketch pads, notepads... all kinds of tablets that i carry with me. sometimes, a sharpie is useful, and at times a sketch pencil is all i need. i love that it wraps around the pad. so brilliant.

i have an undying infatuation with men's apparel. it's something i've recently discovered about myself, though it's been there all along. i get bored looking at women's clothes because it's what i always look at. and i am the worst critic, meaning i can be brutally honest and you will hate me. but there is something of a mystery with men's clothes, isn't there?

i'm used to dressing men. i dress my brother because he's fashionably challenged, though he has the perfect measurements for Thom Browne (not kidding). i dress my closest male friends because they trust my judgement, and almost always give me too much credit i don't deserve. i dress my boyfriend not because he's fashionably challenged but because he has so much potential and needs the push to try new things. yes... i love to the men in my life to look good.

you know how they say you have 7 seconds to make a great first impression? i can size someone up in 3. it's something i cannot explain myself. my eyes do what they do. i have a particularly critical eye for men who appear with style, and naturally it's a rare occasion for my eyes to feast upon such men. as Diana Vreeland said, "Style is something you're born with. It's like class. You don't acquire it. It takes inspiration... but not too much determination. It comes naturally to some people...".

at first there was Serena. and right behind her was Blaire. S & B are best of friends. they are also polar opposites. so who won everyone's hearts? Serena, of course. then she turned into a desperate man-seducing skank leaving a distasteful afterthought in the brain. i, too, was head over heels for Serena. long blonde locks and stems that go for miles. anyone with legs that long will look breathtakingly gorgeous in Balmain. but from the beginning, i always favored Blair's Queen B act. hate to admit it, but she was someone i could relate to on so many levels. call her Ruthless, but i think she's brave and a definite woman of our time. her schemes got her into a lot of trouble, but after 4 seasons she turned out to be quite the accomplished lady.

the girl behind Queen B is Leighton Meester. i read somewhere she had a poor upbringing in a trailer park, or was it my brother who mentioned it? she's a brunette, a talented actress, and the girl who made Blair Waldorf a verb. this is her first editorial that i am impressed by. she's been in others.... by Nylon Mag. i'm glad to see she's stepping out in the light.. almost in competition with her on-screen bff Blake Lively, which btw i'm not too fond of being one of the new faces of Chanel. miss Meester looks crazy good in this photo shoot. and what perfect timing? tonight is Gossip Girl's part 2 of the season finale. catch it at 9:00pm PST on CW11. i don't see the purpose of having in-between collections like Cruise and Resort... even Pre-Fall. Pre-Fall... what is that supposed to mean anyway? the clothes are beautiful. there's no doubt about that. do you suppose the increase in number of upcoming fresh designers are a potential threat to household names like Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Versace, and Prada, that they feel a one-up is necessary? "i can do 5 collections in one year and!! be a part of collaborations. top that! Richard Chai!"

last year's collections were disappointing. i found it boring and was that of the image of a broken record. unplugged. perhaps if time was spent less on mini-projects like Pre-Fall, more time-spent on F/W and S/S would result with collections that are real re-inventions of something old and fabulous. and which, btw... "something old and fabulous" doesn't equate to 2007. i'd like to see less leggings, jeggings, peggings, whatevereggings and more substantial pieces that reflect the immaterial side of our reality. if i see another military-inspired piece in a spanking new collection, i'm going to veto it instantaneously.

anyway, i don't follow Cruise. i barely see the purpose of Resort. but the turn of this fashion industry has reached a new horizon. here we have a short film adaptation of Chanel Cruise 2012. directed by Karl Lagerfeld (naturally), and starring Kristen McMenamy, Freja Beha Erichsen and Baptiste Giabiconi (both... naturally). the storyline is confusing, but the people are beautiful and the music is amazing and of course, the clothes are gorgeous. you also get to see Freja's no-tits tits. enjoy.

this season, there's going to be a lot of leeway in style. i can list all the different trends that will be hot, but the list is too long and a little bit redundant from past seasons. there are two of the many that i have to point out: colorful highlights and bold lips.

i mentioned to my friends and hair stylist that i wanted to dye parts of my hair purple. i didn't quite get the reaction i was hoping for, but then again i should be used to that, right? so i want to dye my hair purple... so what? i think it'll be fun and you know, i'm only young once. my friends' reactions didn't sway me one bit, but my stylist's reaction did it 100%. it can be extremely damaging, and it will wash out a lot faster than a regular dye job. he highly recommended i don't do follow through with it, and i found out there are ways to add bright colors to your hair without the damage: hair extensions. honestly, the first thought after hearing those 2 words only reminded me of one thing: Paris Hilton (not good). but then he showed me the different colors he can add, and i immediate switched gears. Paris who? there is one catch: $600. but it's made of real hair! worth it? no. i'd rather keep my dark tresses and experiment with color by other fashions. like lips.

i like bright lips. i like the adventurous feeling it gives. i also like that it's risky. red has always been a classic, and few people can fabulously pull it off without pulling a Courtney Love. but when it's done right with the correct shade and up-to-date application, you'll have a stunning night. but wearing bold lip color requires more maintenance than your average lip balm. you can't have smudge or else it will look messy. you must wear lip liner or else it will look undone. be careful what you drink and what you eat because lipstick can smear, and it's rather awful. of course there are smudge-free types and it works for a little bit. but it doesn't have that finishing quality. it can end up flaky and a little too cakey. it's disgusting.

designer Pedro Lourenco took the popular iPad up a few notches and made it into a bigger and better accessory than just another "computer" to carry from meeting to meeting. the case has an attached cuff that you can wear, but if only the darn thing didn't weigh 15 pounds. only then would it be practical. but it is kinda cool... you can customize the screen's image to match your outfit or your mood of the day. suppose you can even have your own background music as you walk down 5th Avenue, bumping beats to Lady Gaga's "Born This Way". huh... technology and fashion yet again has a new marriage.

hands down Haider Ackermann is one of my top 5 favorite designers. he can take a sheet of silk and turn it into wearable art that has an element of the future yet is elegant and sleek at the same time. this time around, he played with asymmetrical hemlines and large leather belts. there were rumors that he was going to be Karl Lagerfeld's successor as the Creative Director at Chanel. whether those rumors are true or not, i can't see Ackermann there. actually, i would like to see someone at Chanel who can turn the house back into a classic ready-to-wear without silly things like knee-high fur boots. i can delve into details but i'll save that for a more appropriate post. anyway, there are new rumors that Ackermann might be the new CD for Dior... i deem it a possibility!

is it a surprise that Dior turned up on my post again? nope. but this doesn't mean i support the scandal that's behind John Galliano. if you don't know what i'm talking about, you're living under a rock. can you blame me, though, for still being foolishly in love with the label? Dior is a household name, and amidst the anti-semitic drunken rant, Galliano is still a brilliant designer. it was hard to watch the collection without the obvious distraction, but in the end i loved it. it started deep in burgundies and rich in black, and ended with Galliano's signature Parisian flair. now that he's out of the house, who will start the next chapter for Dior? hmmmm...

obviously, the hair on the left isn't a cut, but it's swept and pulled to make it appear short with a chic pompadour. hair on the right is obviously cut, but it's blunt and "hard". though i love my long tresses and wouldn't trade it for a short cut "just because i can" (i can't), those lucky girls who have the face for such a do should go for it at least once. by the way, this isn't a Pixie. pixies are, in my opinion, really ugly and borderline butch. not to say that either of those looks above are not, but at least it's chic. i like it.

i'm surprised that i like this Vancouver loft. this loft... a very large loft at that (two kitchens?!)... was designed by designer Robert Bailey. though it does have a modern "cold" feel, which i'm usually indifferent to, it's a well-balanced design. i like comfy furniture and warm accessories that is inviting to the guest. it feels more like a home than a modern jail cell, which many modern designs seem to carry. but this... i like. very much. though, there is one thing. what's with the number of seating arrangements? i don't get it.

if the rich and fortunate were to be in the shoes of their service men and women, they could pull it off to still meet their fabulous status quo. just wear Moschino's new fall/winter collection and nobody will think you're any less because you'll look chic and tempting. i'm intrigued by the different tuxedo jackets and the choice of embroidery, or lack thereof. i'm always a fan of tuxedo tails and white dinner jackets. the second number down is so dangerously white that it would be shameful to not want one. actually, there is a dangerous sex appeal that exudes from this set. it's not the least provocative, but it has a certain risk factor. no? perhaps i feel this way because it reminds me of Gossip Girl, and there's some kind of scandal always lurking around the corner.

before i even begin, i know in a year or two i'll look back at this post and ask myself what in the hell i was thinking. these colors? these prints? d&g?!??? but, after all, fashion is about the moment, the now... so tonight, i digress. i honestly believed my obsession over graphic prints were done and over with. also, i have thought to believe by the fashion of late that bright colors were the yesteryears of the return of the 90s. i've been proven wrong, but oddly enough i'm quite pleased. the graphic prints on these looks are just a bit much for me but somehow... in some miraculous and twisted way... it works. the silhouette is amazingly cool. the graphic prints are put together well enough to pass as anything but a random jumble of letters and words. the colors are not just bright, but it's bold and it pops just the right amount. i can't even not mention the wedged sneakers. i mean... how horrifyingly adorable are they. i almost want a pair just for fun. what i loved the most was the partnership of knits and chiffon, and later on in the collection loose chiffon and sequins. and to top it all of, the models walked out for the finale wearing feathered skirts that made my jaw drop in disbelief. it wasn't that i couldn't believe something like that was on the runway. it was a disbelief in how crazy in love i was with this collection, down to the finale. my mind just went... boom.

never heard of this designer, but he has an interesting view. i don't like patterns. and i usually hate circles. it's not the most flattering on a woman, especially when it's body-squeezing. but David Koma plays with this shape and uses it to give a flattering figure by manipulating the natural with different circle sizes forming a different shape as a whole. it's all about the manipulation in the eye. you see a set of patterns, and you follow the lines. it also helps that he uses undertones on some of his pieces. to my surprise, i actually like it. hmm. who knew?

the first half of the collection consisted a set of expected looks after menswear. but what was half a surprise were the fur-covered shoulder trench coats. over NYFW, fur-sleeved winter coats were introduced as "gorilla" coats and i wasn't a fan to say the least. but designer Christopher Bailey did a more likable rendition of this new trend. my absolute favorite is the navy with black fur, for obvious reasons. one: it's navy. two: black fur adds just the right amount of dramatic touch. i need to make it a goal to get myself one of those next winter, even if it's going to cost me my head. aside from that special number, i'm very satisfied with the entire collection. i think it's going to be an interesting season come 2012. there's going to be a lot more color than i had ever imagined. it's about time.

to close out New York Fashion Week, Gwen Stefani had the honor of doing so. my friends know how much i'm obsessed with this label. aside from the fact that i grew up listening to her as frontman for No Doubt, i basically idolized her as my hero ever since i first heard their second album ("The Beacon Street Collection") and fell crazy in love with their third ("Tragic Kingdom"), ALSO aside from the obvious truth that she can pull off platinum blonde hair with red lipstick anddddd pull off chocolate hazelnut with red lipstick (see Cool) i thought she was the coolest. chick. ever. EVER. (she still is). every year and every season, Stefani and her team produces orgasm-worthy salon shoes and the apparel isn't the least disappointing. she's a fine representation that we don't have to dedicate ourselves to one trend. one day, we can be a rockstar. the next day, a rasta "ragga muffin". and the next, a Charlie girl. we're entitled to transformation, even if that means we end up transforming 365 times a year. our kind is quite complex.

above amazing winter coats. above jaw-dropping evening gowns. above Chanel. above ALL. i highly favor one thing and one thing only: men's tailoring on a woman's body. i can't help myself when there's a collection filled with crisp lines, just the right amount of masculinity, and a high-level of sex appeal... less emphasis on the sex. i introduce designer Yigal Azrouel. i don't know much about him except that the tailoring in this collection is impeccable. i love pretty dresses and lace... i really do. but nothing turns me on more than perfect lines. it's... power.

it seems like mr. Ralph Lauren went on a little evening gown escapade for the new season, and it's obvious where his inspiration originated from. i was reminded of a movie i saw some time ago called "The Joy Luck Club". there's a part in the movie that traces back to an era when Shanghai was as luxurious as the Hollywood hills (back in the day). this is an old-timer's glamor made new. after several seasons of "edgy" and neon brights, "awkward" and "so ugly it's too cool", it's only been a matter of time before we throw childish ambitions aside and simmer down to a more "ma-too-ure" state of fashion. is elegance and class a trend of the yesteryears? mmmmm... designers might say otherwise.

i rarely anticipate anything exciting and new from Donna Karan's sportswear line because it's always the same (and honestly kind of boring). this time, however, i felt a little tingle and something pulling on my heartstrings. this Fall, there's a lot of cool-factor and sex appeal that reminds me of Brooklyn at its finest (pre-hipster era). what with the neon lights at the head of the runway, it only asks for a certain kind of mood. i particularly like it when moto-jackets aren't taken literally. in the end, it's still a black leather jacket that's been twice done before and more... but when it's manipulated it turns into something new. nice.

after two years of 90s grunge redemption, i still have a soft spot for plaid and grit. it's so pretty. designer Joseph Altuzarra executed this well, and so well enough a girl with grunge at heart can still mesh with the professionals as an adult. this time, however, don't play with plaid but take it up a notch and play with argyle (even if it's less flattering).

there are so many things i love about this, but where to begin! first, i'm *loving* the return of black. Alexander Wang's collections wouldn't be Alexander Wang without it. second, i can't not love these capes. call it little black riding hood, but it's another way to stay warm against the cold *and* maintain status quo. third, the silky trail of a tail. asymmetrical hemlines have been welcomed for Spring, but i think i like it on shirts more than dresses. it's actually really cooooooool. and one more note: the thick knits are *incredibly* sexy. is there nothing more sexier than a woman who leaves the shape of her body a mystery? it's like she doesn't give a damn. oooh so coooooool.

i never really paid attention to designer Prabal Gurung in previous seasons, but over the weeks before Feb's NYFW began i've been keeping his name in the back of my mind. i remember reading somewhere that he may be the new hot couturier of this generation, but that just might have be hearsay. or was it...? hearsay or not, this season proves why he should be and more.
